excerpt - "to brooklyn bridge"
hart crane - 1930

"Under thy shadow by the piers I waited;
Only in darkness is thy shadow clear.
The City's fiery parcels all undone,
Already snow submerges an iron year . . .

O Sleepless as the river under thee,
Vaulting the sea, the prairies' dreaming sod,
Unto us lowliest sometime sweep, descend
And of the curveship lend a myth to God."

i was in downtown los angeles looking for an inspiring subject to paint -
wouldn't have guessed that it would be right there in the parking lot next to me.
the light here has been so brilliant lately - making for those deep, luminous shadows.

the objects might not be anything special, but the play of dark/light - sun / shade seemed
really outstanding to me.
this is right off alvarado, next to macarthur park.

ponte fabricius - rome

The Ponte Fabricius is the oldest bridge in Rome that still exists in its original state. It spans half of the Tiber River, from the Campus Martius on the east side to Tiber island in the middle.
The bridge was built in 62 BC, to replace an earlier wooden bridge and was commissioned by Lucius Fabricius. Completely intact from Roman antiquity, it has been in continuous use ever since.

Daily Paintworks - Auction for Japanese Disaster Relief

I am donating my painting "Japanese Gardens at the Huntington" for a special auction being held at the Daily Paintworks site . They have created this auction in a unique effort to help in Japanese disaster relief.

Please follow the link below to view artworks for auction. Many artists are participating in this broad challenge to raise funds for the ravaged nation of Japan in such dire need for our assistance.

Many thanks to all of you who were generous enough to bid on my last painting. It is going to a great new home; and a substantial donation is being forwarded directly to the Japanese Red Cross.

Auction for Relief Efforts in Japan

13 March 2011

Thomas W. Schaller - Watercolor Artist

Even with spring making its way across the landscape here, our thoughts are never far lately from the enormous troubles facing the nation of Japan.

It is in this light – and following the lead of my friend and fellow watercolor artist Keiko Tanabe - that I would like to dedicate this edition of my newsletter to the ongoing relief efforts  in Japan by offering my painting  “Huntington Gardens” for auction here.
All proceeds from the winning bidder will be donated in full directly to the Japanese Red Cross.

To make a bid, contact me via email  - tom@twschaller.com .  Please begin at U.S. $200 and bidding will close at midnight Friday, 18 March 2011.  The winner will be contacted via email shortly thereafter.

As individuals, we can often feel helpless in light of such a disaster, but by joining forces through our art , we can hope to make some small difference.

With appreciation,
Tom

recent blogs and interviews

Just wanted to mention two  blogs that should be of interest to painters in watercolor everywhere - well worth bookmarking:

Konstantin Sterkhov : Konstantin was kind enough to interview me recently for his fascinating blog on practitioners of watercolor. And although I'm very happy to be featured, the vast range of artists he features is extremely impressive.

http://sterkhovart.blogspot.com/

Fernando Pena:  This blog is really indispensable reading for anyone at all interested in watercolor arts.  My friend and colleague Fernando applies his considerable creative energies to featuring an extremely wide range of artists - past and present - artists' materials, and techniques.

______________________________________________________

there are times when we find ourselves searching for our place in the world - for a place we can call "home". this can be a physical location; or sometimes, just a state of heart or of mind.

and as is often the case, the real story is told not so much in where we happen to wind up - but in how we struggled to get there.

i wish you all a safe and pleasant journey.
